  1. Big boilers almost always use membrane water walls—and for good reason. They’re simple to work with, save on steel, insulate well, and keep the furnace airtight.​
  1. How are they made? Longitudinal welding joins multiple finned tubes into a single heating surface. That’s what creates the membrane structure.​
  1. Each part is welded to match the specs of the circulation loop’s pipe groups. During installation, these groups are sealed together with more welds. The result? The entire furnace gets wrapped in a continuous, water-cooled membrane layer—hence the name “membrane water wall.”

Functions

 

(1)Improve combustion efficiency

The high temperature gas produced by combustion in the boiler furnace will be cooled through the water wall, and the water wall pipe will make the combustion process more complete by absorbing the heat released by the high temperature gas, thus improving the combustion efficiency.

(2)Control emissions

The role of the water wall also includes controlling the emission of harmful substances such as nitrogen oxides and sulfides produced during the combustion process of the boiler, making the chemical composition of the flue gas more stable and reasonable.

(3)Protect the boiler wall

The water wall can effectively reduce the temperature of the inner wall of the boiler furnace, reduce the time and opportunity of direct contact between the boiler wall and high temperature gas, and thus greatly extend the service life of the boiler

 

Advantages of membrane water walls

 

(1) Ensure the tightness of the furnace wall and reduce the air leakage of the combustion chamber.

(2) The combustion chamber is fully water-cooled, which is conducive to preventing coking in the case of intensified combustion.

(3) The heat storage capacity is small, the combustion chamber heats up quickly, and the cooling is also fast, which can shorten the cooling time of boiler start-up and shutdown.

(4) It is suitable to use the pipe-laying furnace wall, which greatly reduces the load of the boiler frame and is convenient for suspension.

(5) Compared with the plain tube, the heat absorption capacity of the tube is improved.

(6) It improves the degree of pre-assembly of boiler parts, which is convenient and reduces the installation workload.

 

Classification

 

According to the different manufacturing processes, there are three types of membrane water cooling walls:

(1) The first one is welded in rows with rolled fin tubes, and the welding workload is small, but the fin tubes are expensive.

(2) The plain tube and fin (flat steel) are welded in rows, the material cost is low, and it is easy to meet the requirements of a variety of pitches, but the flat steel has high precision requirements and requires finishing equipment.

(3) Plain tube sintering welding, the inter-pipe fin is formed by the welding wire melting and filling, which is mostly used for the pipe screen with a small inter-pipe pitch. The inter-tube pitch of the membrane water wall is related to the boiler pressure, furnace heat load and other factors, and the general s/d is 1.2~1.5.
